Peace Letter to Ukraine 2

Violence and war as destructive matter are standing against culture, art and creativity. The Russian-Ukraine War is barbarian und destructive trying to erase solidarity and humanity.
But not only the Ukrainians and their friends and supporters are standing up against the violation of international law and the humanitarian desaster, but all civilized people, cultural workers and artists.
This 2nd video program – starting immediately with spontaneous submissions on 1 March 2022 on an ongoing basis during a limited period, e.g. as long as the war is running (hopefully for a very limited period) – is representing another way how art can serve as a tool to show and confirm solidarity with the Ukrainian people – a way to prevent that people get accustomed to the war and forget it like they forgot all the other wars on Eacth, because they are no longer in the news.

If your are an artist creating videos- please consider to submit your recent video –>
Open Call - deadline: ongoing

Alphabet Art Centre

Throughout the centuries dreams have been to many cultures around the world the images that speak of the future. In modern times dreams were seen as a connection to the unconscious. Today these morbid and extremely disturbing dreams are associated with the symptoms of a mental illness. This video is a free version of The Labyrinth of Crete in which the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur are reflected in a single character.

Mauricio Sanhueza (Peru,1978) studied at the University of Lima from 1996 until 2000. He then continued his studies at the Lima visual arts school, Corriente Alterna, graduating in 2006 with top honors. In 2011 he obtain a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from San Marcos University. Since 2004 he has participated in several collective art exhibits and festivals in Peru and abroad. Katya Kan and Dianne Harris (UK) – “The Epiphany of the White Rabbit”, 2022, 15:00
Epiphany of the White Rabbit is the vision of an epiphany, it eludes to the quest for knowledge, the journey of awakening and the surrender into the unknown. The White Rabbit as a spiritual symbol for the swiO journey along the path to enlightenment. A quest into ’what is’.
The pre-SocraRcs, who studied the most obvious thing to them – Nature, wanted to develop the essence of being and explain the changes around them, namely, how things went from being to non-being and to accept all that comes.
Set on locaRon in a vegetable patch and winter gardens. The rabbit encounters an uncomfortable awakening, an intrinsic and deep connecRon to nature and a shedding of layers, her skin, her inhibiRons, her outlook, and her pre-concepRons as a metaphor for change.
The White Rabbit knows there is more to life than the mere cocoon of the ‘self’. The work explores expansion of consciousness, the many selves, the quest for knowledge and portrays the ever changing flux and flow of nature and the elements, fire portrayed as the source.
Her lack of shadow represents her lack of ego, a metaphor drawing a line between the conscious and unconscious mind, in terms of shadow, a person who is highly conscious is like a full moon with no dark or shadowy areas. White, the symbol for purity, forgiveness, peace and a cleansing of the mind.
The Rabbit uses her white skin as a flag, the element of surrender and turns it into a kaleidescopic wonderland, moving into ultra dimensions. The work was designed, filmed and visioned by Dianne Harris, starring Katya Kan as her avitar – the White Rabbit.
Dancers Isabel Cressy & Laura Cherry are featured. The music is by Vivaldi, Handel, Marty Ratcliff & Dianne Harris.

KATYA KAN
An idiosyncra-c specimen of globaliza-on, I was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, my father being North Korean and my mother being Russian. Having caught a glimpse of the ex-USSR, I have a nostalgic, conflic-ng percep-on of poli-cal and cultural systems. Devoid of a homeland, I focus my art on the themes of ethnical atomiza-on, emp-ness and nostalgia. Unable to fully assimilate into any one culture, I find myself as an outsider with an eclec-c ar-s-c taste. Art represents the act of seeking, assembling and immortalizing beauty. Through my ar-s-c prac-ce, I recreate the state of inspira-on and emancipa-on, experienced during my childhood. My works strive to capture the ephemeral impressions. The concepts, which I explore in my work, include the globaliza-on, surveillance, nostalgia, utopia and ero-cism.

103. Mikey Peterson (USA) - Through The Rift, 2021, 6:58
Mikey Peterson (USA) – Through The Rift, 2021, 6:58
The relationship between the information we retain and its imagery we mentally re-envision and reassemble, helps us conceptualize imperceptible events such as the slow-moving catastrophe of climate change. Recalling Robert Jay Lofton’s concept of fragmentary awareness, we form surreal sequences from these visual thoughts in order to create our own narratives of the real events that are difficult to comprehend.

In this video, natural imagery unfolds into a surreal cycle of destruction, death, and rebirth. The fragmented footage, taken from three coastlines in the United States, is edited into new forms – accentuating nature’s close interplay with itself and us. The soundtrack, taken from the ambient sound of the source footage, is manipulated and layered with synth drones – reinforcing the intense and uncanny relationship between memory and reality. By dramatizing these natural moments a light is cast on our environmental impact and the overall power, horror, and beauty of nature itself.

Mikey Peterson
is a Chicago-based video/audio artist. His imagery, influenced by pre-CGI science fiction films, arthouse horror, experimental cinema, and sound collage, aims to disturb the viewer’s self-perception and sense of place. Footage is taken out of its original natural context and manipulated to relay other truths about the world that it is from – unveiling themes of memory, environmental preservation, evolution, disorientation, and fear. His work has shown in festivals, galleries and museums including NYC’s Museum of the Moving Image; Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography; the Chicago Cultural Center; the University of Chicago’s Smart Museum; Rome’s MAXXI Museum; the LA Art Show; South Korea’s CICA Museum, Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum; SIGGRAPH Conference, Lucca Film Festival, London’s Visions in the Nunnery, CURRENTS New Media, Germany’s The Wake Up ! Carolyn Kane (USA) – The Failure of Images (Fifty Wars After 1945), 2011, 14:40
Images suggest access to another time and place, to someone else’s reality. Images of war––photographic and electronic images to be precise––are expected to give more: truth, ethical commitment, politics, historical record, recognition, commemoration, shock, horror (and the pleasures therein)…However, images remain images….In less than fifteen minutes of digital video, I chronologically reassemble found archival footage from fifty wars after 1945. My image manipulation techniques are basic: layering, enlargement, and juxtaposition. Many of the color effects and distortions (pixilation, blurs, and artifacts) are a result of compression-decompression processes intrinsic to online video. Appropriately, these (natural) distortions inadvertently act as a form violence and self-censorship, further mediating war away from its depictions.

One of the main features of war is that it forces people to leave their homeland in search of a dignified life. In Point of departure_Preveza, which is part of a video project that deals with the troubled landscape of Greece, people from Asian countries work long hours a day under the sun for a meager living wage. At the same time, racism and hypocricy abounds as a large percentage not only of landowners but also of the general Greek population do not want refugees in the country.

Masa Hicisin Dervisevic (CZ) – Personal Images: Personal Semiotics of War, 2013, 9:54
‘Personal Images: Personal Semiotics of War’ deals with experience and memory of war. It presents parts of my collection of diaries, letters, and photographs I was collecting during the war in Bosnia from 1992 to 1995. The whole video also contains intimate talk with my family about their emotional experience of war. I named the video as ‘personal semiotics’ because it deals with meaning of the language, and sings I was subconsciously creating as a teenager during the war. It also deals with broken language, inability of communication, and sense of isolation from the outside world.

That is a memory of my sophomore year of 1989, the year I was almost killed.
Twenty years have passed, mothers’ hair have grown gray, and siblings’ tears have been exhausted, Silence, oblivion and denial have erased our memory and made everything that happened obscure and distorted, Changing the unreal into reality. Identity of scared, of fear in front of war memory collective, in front of terrorisme idea.
” _ Patience _ ” is a film of ” IAAAI “, artist videaste approaching the performance in reality and on the distant network.
With this film I finish a first cycle of three films : ” Ferrari “, ” silence_violence ” and ” _ patience _ ” that I propose to you hereafter. This film is three arrows tended towards their target, shared violence.
The images of this video are turned to London. They underline our fears, our voluntary absences of the world, our escapes, our cowardice. But patience…
Realized before the attacks of the London subway, this film touches us end of the finger, delicately, to awake us d’un drowsiness, a nap started on l’épaule of our neighbor, l’indifférence, ḻindividualist. Hardly waked up, hidden behind a smile, we excuse ourselves and we disappear in the underground pipe. Easy…
But here, we are seen. The cameras of monitoring watch for us. The camera of Liza alias ” IAAAI “, benevolent, looks at us and takes care over the night of the passers by. The slowness of its movement striates with horizontal lines the fixed smiles ; some underline a face, d’autres bar a life. All show us the direction of the voyage. Closed doors, the sound goes up in intensity, we will not be able to leave more. But patience…
The staircases involve us to the top or bottom but no door s’offre with us, no opening towards any outside. Implaccable reality we will not leave this world of the lower parts, intact. We pass, d’un interior at another interior. We travel Immobiles. But patience, we will end up locking up the flight of the birds in the cage of our images.

Stigmata is a work that explores the tragedy of violence and repression. The allegory, metaphor, literal image of somebody who is prisoner is elliptical references of the war, torture and death. The downcast look, the hands wraps in barbed wire turns out to be an opportune allusion to the threats of military dictatorship in Argentina and in the rest of world.

In the classic film The Wizard of Oz, the main character Dorothy is asked to go someplace where she cannot cause any problems. Dorothy wonders if there is such a place and bursts into one of the world’s most famous film songs: Over the Rainbow. In Nicola Bergström Hansen’s video, the same song is performed by the BAE Systems Brass Band – the arms industry giant BAE Systems own orchestra. The video contains a storm of news images from distant lands, where fighter jets and blue skies are not always associated with festivals. Campaign texts taken from the arms manufacturers Saab AB’s and BAE Systems’ marketing, are integrated into the composition. The texts convey the weapons industry’s views on their own contribution to a safe and protected environment.

It is a kaleidoscope of images, of sounds, of beats, of words. Of intakes of breath, of exhalations, declarations, lamentations and celebrations.
Of sounds, images and words colluding to find meaning.
Between breaths. Between beats. Between small events and catastrophes. Between the moments of our life. Where we can all meet. Alone and Breathless. When we cannot make love instead of war, we make art.

Maryam Muliaee (Iran/USA) – Survival Under Atomic Attack, 2017, 3:45
A place occurs in different analogous worlds: in its physical site, also in photographs, movies and the stories people share. The specificity of the bearer medium reduces and simultaneously adds new strata of meaning, history, and memory to the place. In this piece, I recycled the video’s still images in order to rework the video as a hybrid medium. I used a printer and a scanner respectively for ten cycles, rematerializing the video until the images of the places literally go absent by the loss/degradation that happens in switching between the analog and digital. However, through erasure, the aura is resurfaced and a new place is mapped: a place-within-a-place that lets the viewers invest their memories in and reimagine/remember it later. The specificity of the video as a composite of multiple media, with the help of digital technology, is revealed here. This idea inspired me to bring the still photographs into life and unearth the photographic stillness embedded in the moving-image through degradation/loss.

NO FLAK is a text/image animation that links the attitudes of Dada and the Theatre of the Absurd to the present moment. In the aftermath of an election where the internet offers the opportunity for rants on social media and absurd tweets from the U.S. president the work scours past and present for bits of humor and philosophy to define a science of the imaginary, an approach to these troubled times. With quotes from Alfred Jarry, Jonathan Crary, George Orwell, Plato, Aristotle, Elena Gorokhova and new rules from the U.S. president.

The letters “NO” suggest a richly coloured and persistent “joy” of saying “No”. After a while, a moment of crisis arrives, putting an end to the “NO”s. The video finally ends though in a sort of resolute rebirth reflecting the enduring memory of a need to say “No”. Even so, the “story” remains ambiguous. It remains open purposely in order to allow each viewer to identify with its content in their own way, according to their own personal history. The work makes use of letters and colour to convey its message rather than using classic narrative forms or abstract shapes.

Shahar Marcus (Israel) – Still Burning, 2009, 2:36
The video presents a hybrid human figure: the bottom half is naked and the upper half is doe. The doe, an organic material, a material that could transforms, turns the figure to a human golem.
The scene is presented as still nature which refers to the old tradition of the art history and the traditional paintings of ‘still nature’. Suddenly flames come from the figure and the upper half of the figure – the one covered with doe – is set on fire. The flames rise up in the air but as fast as the fire bursts in it also calms down. The living material – the doe – turns into a dead smoking monument

Shahar Marcus (b. 1971) is an Israeli-based artist who primarily works in the medium of performance and video art. His initial works dealt with the exploration of his own body and its limitations-

Thus, Marcus reflects on his own heritage, environment, and the creation of local historical narratives. His works are influenced by the visual language of cinematography along with familiar themes and tributes to art – history, and artists, such as Ives Klein, Paul McCarthy, Peter Greenway, and Jackson pollock.

It shows a young woman in a ritual crying, one that evokes the mourning wails of Salentinian Greece (Italy). Moroloja is a reflection about the experience of pain. The experience of pain is experience of loss, of mourning. The individual pain, expressed in the video refers to a cosmology of pain, to a sense of universal suffering.

Finn Harvor (South Korea) – Meat: New Cut, 2022, 2:32
This is a long version of “Meat” (a poem of mine originally published in the literary magazine Former People) and “The Wargasm 1” (originally published in the literary magazine The Asses of Parnassus). They have been remixed and knitted together with a third poem, “Sick Angel”. The artwork is from a variety of projects, including two illustrated novels I’m working on. The music was composed on GarageBand.

The building blocks of the videopoem were put together during the summer of 2017, when tension between North Korea and the United States was at its terrifying height. One could walk the streets if Seoul (where my wife and I live) and see couples, young families, and realize all were living simply at the mercy of military systems primed to detonate at any second. But some of the eerie terror of life on the Korean Peninsula has more complicated roots: some of these are in the Korean War itself — the first of the Cold War’s proxy wars, and guided (as a geopolitical conflict rather than the civil war it began as) by the administration of Harry Truman and his Secretary of State Dean Acheson. Truman and Acheson were in turn responding to what they saw as Cold War machinations by Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union. Finally, we are the point of a new war — this time in Ukraine. And this conflict too has historical roots. The events of the past keep echoing.

The other theme in this work is the role played in modern war making by the arms industry— those high-tech industrialists for whom War is a business. And, in this case, a business with dizzyingly high profits. Profits in that scale arouse appetites; in this case, an appetite for meat….

The dream has not yet been accomplished: so much still needs to be done to accept the other, the different, the refugee, the one fleeing from misery, the civil war to arrive after so many sacrifices and so much pain on our lands considered as a new opportunity for live. Marcantonio Lunardi (Italy) – The Cage, 2016, 05:46
Food, water, book, language, beauty, earth, sea, love, warmth, man, woman, desire. What is our cage dividing us from? Is it blocking us? Or is it protecting us? The barbed wire is a simple structure, a cylinder-shaped object deformed by a light twisting, which stretches, in the room, from one point to another.
The cage envelopes us with its barbed wire from our innermost roots, dragging us in the shadow. This work introduces the solitude imposed on us by the cages we are living in. Sometimes we are aware of them, but sometimes we are not: Lunardi, therefore, shows with his work what some of us find too difficult to acknowledge. In the typical style of the author, the work has been built around some tableau vivants which represent, through the body of the actors, some of the conditions which we experience on a daily basis in a society which is pervaded by
egotism. The nature of egotism cannot be simplified with the notion of selfishness, because it represents the perversion of those who connect each reality to themselves and themselves only. Therefore, the introspective path introduced with The cage aims at putting in evidence those bonds which force the lives of the individuals into strict boundaries which can only result into the refusal of the other human beings. Moreover, another paradoxical and grotesque consequence of such boundaries is that they lead to the refusal of one’s own self.

Marcantonio Lunardi
Graduated in documentary direction, since 2001 Lunardi has been involved in social and political documentation working on installations, documentaries and video art works. After the masters at the Festival dei Popoli in Florence with Michael Glawogger, Sergei Dvortsevoy,Thomas Heise and Andrés Di Tella, he began a journey in the field of moving images, experimenting with languages on the border between real cinema and video art. Isabel Pérez del Pulgar (Spain) – FRAME 1415, 2015, 09:22
“If we give the attributes of a medium to the artist, we must then deny him the state of consciousness on the esthetic plane about what he is doing or why he is doing it. All his decisions in the artistic execution of the work rest with pure intuition and cannot be translated into a self-analysis, spoken or written, or even thought out.
In the creative act, the artist goes from intention to realization through a chain of totally subjective reactions. His struggle toward the realization is a series of efforts, pains, satisfaction, refusals, decisions, which also cannot and must not be fully self-conscious, at least on the esthetic plane.
The result of this struggle is a difference between the intention andits realization, a difference which the artist is not aware of.
Consequently, in the chain of reactions accompanying the creative act, a link is missing. This gap, representing the inability of the artist to express fully his intention, this difference between what he intended to realize and did realize, is the personal ‘art coefficient’ contained in the work”
Marcel Duchamp : The Creative Act (1957)

Justyna Maluchnik (Poland) – Freedom, 2009, 13:18
Freedom is an ongoing video art project.
Currently the film work consists of two sections; one made while I was studying in Finland in 2008 and the second as part of my Masters degree in Poland in 2009. The subjects of the Finnish section are students while the Polish element was made using volunteers from different social groups including a philosopher, a homeless people, a prisoners, a monk, a child,
an artist, a lesbian, a gay, people from nursing home and a feminist. Each subject was asked the question, ‘what is freedom?’ and their spontaneous responses were recorded. The aim was to show different views of what freedom means. One single definition does not exist. Freedom is something that we all tend to take for granted these days but is a subject that deserves our consideration. Are we actually all as free as we think? I would like to visit as many countries as possible and ask people question: “What is freedom?”

Justyna Maluchnik
was born in Poland in 1985 and lives nad works in London. She is a photographer, video artist and graphic designer. In 2009 she graduated Academy of Humanities and Economics in Lodz/Poland and gained MA in Audiovisual Communication. Her primary medium is photography and video. In the centre of her research and inspiration is always a human being. The visual aspect of the human body as well as human thoughts, feelings and beliefs are very significant for her. She always try to fathom what he or she represents to the viewer or outside world. There are different ways of interpretation of the same subject which in her opinion deserves our consideration. Her works explore relations of the human being from a psychological, social and physical point of view.

Hernando Urrutia (Portugal) – TRANSGRESSION – A Post-Human Vision, 2021, 2:00
It is the posthuman vision of transgression. Where different transgressions are placed as future conditions of the human being. Transgression of the frontiers between man/machine, time/space and life/death, with new forms of communication codes by forging new visualisations of the virtual environment.
It is the identification and means of control of each being, losing autonomy and freedom.
Transgression of the field of laboratory creations of viruses that endanger human life, like biological weapons that end up being just as lethal as physical weapons, like bombs that end up killing without distinction in the warring.
Transgression of the beings created from biological and cybernetic experiments, to face the future “Underground” world.

Mauricio Saenz (Mexico) – Line, 2014, 5:00
Filmed in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, “Line” explores the concept of the symbolic border between what apparently exists and doesn’t, represented through the idea of the delimitation between life and death. The scene portrays and makes special emphasis in the line that separates what is alive from what has departed, of what still keeps existing confronted with what memory stopped making present.

Mauricio Saenz (Matamoros, Mexico 1977)
pursued a BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas and a MA in Artistic Production from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain. In 2011 he received the purchase award from the Yucatan Biennial in the videoart category and has participated in solo and group shows in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Germany, France, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Venezuela and Argentina. His work focuses on the concept of impossibility and its relativity by means of elements that emphasize abandonment and confinement interlaced to a paradoxical factor that would revert it through disciplines as videoart, installation, and performance art.

Anna Kryvenko (Ukraine) – Silently Like a Comet, 2014, 8:14
The revolution on Kiev’s Maidan as a close-up of the city. Recycled amateur footage from the internet offers an ironic commentary on the spectacular narratives by which the media described events in Ukraine at the turn of the year. Randomly selected and shown out of context, the various sequences break down the events into individual, slow-motion fragments before reassembling them in an emotional collage of incomprehensible unrest and random moments on the street.

Anna Kryvenko,

The small but strong community of the Lesya’s Theater (Lviv, Ukraine) gathered altogether in a large theatre hall. 88 people took out their phones and turned the volume up so the word “children” could be heard in many languages. This is how this video got made – a reflection on the events of the Russian-Ukrainian war at this moment.
The war is going on. We do not know what will happen next, but we know that Baba Prisya’s quotation from eponymous play directed by Oleksiy Kravchuk, who is defending Ukraine at the front line – “Inaction is the worst sin” – is a laconic and undeniable credo for each of us. We would like to share it with as many people around the world as possible.

A little video by a weary cynic about an insane world battered by constant revolt, armed conflict, and terrifying tumult. I use news footage from the recent strife in Ukraine only because those events were unfolding at the moment. But this isn’t really about that one particular war (though I do name one particular villain). You can even substitute your own image of evil at the conclusion. Where did I put the key to the bomb shelter my dad built during the (last) cold war?

I hope it’s not too late.”

Katina Bitsikas (USA) – In Memoriam, 2021, 5;33
Synopsis: In Memoriam celebrates the life of my father, by giving him the funeral he was never able to have due to COVID-19. The preserved flowers were formally living, but still look alive, and represent the memories of those we’ve lost, which are sometimes so vivid that you think they are still alive. This sometimes happens when waking up from a dream about your deceased loved one, thinking they are still alive and then it suddenly hits you that it was all a dream. The red threads represent a connection to the dead, and back to the earth. The earth-like materials of the casket and flowers are representing the dead. The strings pulling me into the earth to be with loved ones show that we are always connected with those we have lost. I wear modernized funeral garb as I decorate the three caskets, one for each member of my family. The pattern references the skeletal structure of the body.

Katina Bitsicas is a new media artist who utilizes video, photography, and performance in her art works. She uses these mediums to explore personal loss and trauma and the theme of bringing back to life, while the afterlife is still looming near. She has exhibited worldwide, including The Armory Show in New York, PULSE Art Fair in Miami Beach, HereArt in New York, and Art in Odd Places in Orlando. She received her BA from Kalamazoo College, Post-Bacc from SACI in Florence, Italy, and MFA from the University of South Florida. Cast alone amongst thousands; forced, overnight, to leave their home, their family, their animals, and the places they love; fractious, precarious, putting their lives in the hands of strangers. In this surrealistic video we can see a bus moving in a strange place, and it doesn’t stop, thus people can’t get off it. Somebody asks to open the door, but its route becomes more unpredictible instead.

Alina Vasilchenko
is an artist and filmmaker based in Moscow. Jean-Michel Rolland (France) – Sabotage, 2021, 02:34
The character presented in this video is not wearing a uniform and yet behaves like a soldier.
With his fellows, he ends up building an army where everyone seems to obey different orders, a disorganized army which pretends to obey but which in reality does as it pleases.
When disobedience seems out of reach, “misobedience” may be the solution.

Jean-Michel Rolland
is a French artist born in 1972. Through video art works, generative art, audiovisual performances and interactive installations, he questions the temporality, a genuine fourth dimension inherent to moving image, as well as the duality between his two favorite mediums, the sound and the visual.

Matteo Campulla (Italy) – It’s Me, 2019, 1:48
Borns and develops as an unconscious psychoanalytic experience in defining oneself starting from the Lacanian concept of the “other” as a mirror and counterpart. Through the use of the datamosh technique, a digital artifact that becomes language, the various scenes that make up the work merge and break down with one another, eliminating the barriers imposed by bodies, social status and language itself . The liquid and fluid rendering of the images itself becomes the mirror of the great Other, that of contemporary society, a saturated overexposure with false needs in which to get lost, where what remains of us is only the certainty of our name.

Matteo Campulla (Iglesias, Sardinia – 1982)
is an interdisciplinary artist, influenced by contemporary culture and the contamination between languages. He works mainly through digital and new media, mixing his artistic training with what he learned as a television production technician, who therefore finds his greatest expression in sound and video. He immediately uses the glitch and the error as an aesthetic description of the contemporary crisis of the individual and his perception of reality, in the loop of the hyper-connected everyday life. Lives and works in Milan.

Vulcanologists discover that a “highway to hell” would circulate a few hundred meters from our feet in an immense underground network with multiple branches and at each end a volcano.
Shouldn’t knowledge of the inherent risks of natural disasters be one of the reasons for the end of war, war which always finds justification, fallacious justification of its right to destroy a people. So our values of solidarity and fraternity should be exercised, both in the private sphere and in the public sphere so that peace and security are maintained.

Paulo B. Menezes (Pt) – Song for Chechnya, 11’52”, 4:3, PAL SD, 2007
In 2004 ARTE TV brodacasted a documentary by Nino Kirtadze on Chechnya’s occupation by the Russians. At that time, I recorded the documentary and watched it again, moved by its humanism and courage in exposing something so very wrong. Several years later I started working on the piece using both analogue and digital techniques to degrade the image so that, together with the 1964 electronic music by Robert Ashley, it would illustrate the hell Chechen people lived in under Russian imperialism and oppression. The year after the release of the documentary, Chechen radical separatists took the Moscow theatre and held hundreds of hostages for two-and-a-half days, demanding the Russian withdrawal from Chechnya, i.e. continuous imperialism oppression leading to despair and religious fundamentalism. Image distortion and editing went on and off through 2007.
Footage:

Born in Portugal in 1976, he enrolled in Film Studies at the Portuguese national film-school, Escola Superior de Teatro & Cinema where he would obtain a bachelor degree in editing and narrative.
